Democracy According to Jazz

Time

Thursday, October 23 2025 at 6:00pm

Location

Sun Room, Memorial Union

Speaker: Otis Moss

Reverend Otis Moss III will share how Black communities created a spiritual world view to handle existential issues facing our democracy. He will discuss how Black leaders used their faith to find strength to confront civic challenges and celebrate the ideas of love, justice, resilience, and self-determination. Those lessons can be used today as we examine our moral and internal compass as individuals and a democratic society.

Rev. Moss is the senior pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, which has more than 8,500 congregants. Rev. Moss is an author and filmmaker, and his latest book is Dancing in the Darkness. He founded The Unashamed Media Group, a justice-centered, faith-based agency committed to producing and curating stories to inspire the heart and challenge the mind. In 2020, Rev. Moss created Otis’ Dream, a short film about his grandfather’s unsuccessful attempt to vote in 1946.

The University Book Store will be onsite selling “Dancing in the Darkness: Spiritual Lessons for Thriving in Turbulent Times” at the event.

This lecture recording can be found on the Available Recordings page approximately two business days after the event and will remain accessible for three weeks.
