Cyclone Civics

In November 2024, President Wintersteen announced the creation of Cyclone Civics, an initiative to provide opportunities for education and research on civic education and free speech. Cyclone Civics was created in response to persistent gaps in Americans’ civic literacy and civic skills.

Cyclone Civics will work with on- and off-campus partners to promote civic education and free expression by:

Civic Literacy

Enhancing understanding of civic knowledge, such as government structures, history, democratic principles, and knowledge of civil liberties such as free expression.

Civic Skills

Developing skills necessary for civic engagement, including critical thinking, effective communication, respect for free speech rights, and participation in public affairs.

Civic Disposition

Creating a culture of respect for the democratic process, emphasizing values such as tolerance, respect, and active participation in democracy.

Cyclone Civics is housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and overseen by Dean Benjamin Withers.
