Addressing gaps in civic education

Cyclone Civics will:

  • Assess the civic literacy of Iowa State seniors through administration of the Purdue Civic Literacy examination
  • Enhance the curriculum through an innovative minor in civics and free speech and new courses designed to improve students’ civic literacy and civic skills.
  • Explore experimental courses related to civic education, including the role of AI in civics.

LAS 1780X : American Civics

Starting in Spring 2026, students can enroll in a new 3-credit course, LAS 1780X : American Civics.

The course is an examination of people’s rights and responsibilities in the context of the republican system of government in the United States. It will include readings of original documents from the American founding to discern the founders’ intentions, and draw upon Supreme Court decisions and writings from later thinkers to explore how interpretations of these documents have evolved.

Student voter engagement

Cyclone Civics encourages students to exercise their right to vote as an important component of civic engagement. As many college students are first-time voters, we encourage them to check out the voting FAQs and civic engagement resources from the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics.
